I'm a Gadgeteer - that's my HOBBY and I'm sticking to it!

Read my story over at The-Gadgeteer.com and the gear I write about at GearDiary.com. Two fine gadget - gear sites you should bookmark!

I know, not all Asians are geeks, but Pete Townshend did say "All the best cowboys have Chinese eyes."

Photo Hunt 40: Technology

Theme: Technology | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

With the proliferation of cell phones, these towers are popping up everywhere inside of city limits where once they were on rural farms, water towers and hilltops. There were 18,000 in 1994 to more than 175,000 (2005) now according to Wired News. Without additional towers, calls are lost and reception suffers. There's a lot of debate also about "Not In My Backyard but Why Is My Service Crappy" placements of these towers, cancer causing radio waves and debate about cellular carriers placing towers hidden inside of steeples and disguised with fake tree limbs and foilage.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Memory

Photo Hunt 39: Memory

Theme: Memory | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

Childhood memories are fun... and while being a teenager carries fond memories as well, I haven't met anybody willing to relive those years again!

Remember being knee high and having an older bother pushing you way up on the swings or the first time on a big slide that looked like it was twelve stories high? And it was ok to to play outside until dark when your momma would call out your name really loud for dinner?

Those were the days of innocence with great MEMORIES.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - New

Photo Hunt 39: New

Theme: New | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

2006 is closing out - out with the OLD, in with the NEW!

I've had these three wise monkeys for many years and this past month, we recieved this Christmas ornament of these snowmen - “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” Might be wise to live this way in 2007, but I then thought wait, do I live in a cave or hide my head in the sand in order to “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil?"

I turn to Wikipedia for some insight on the phrase:

Just as there is disagreement about the origin of the phrase, there are differing explanations of the meaning of “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” Some contend that it is a proverb serving as a reminder not to be so snoopy, so nosy, and so gossipy. Others say that it is a warning to stay away from places where immoral acts are taking place. Whatever the origin and meaning of “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil,” it is one of the most visual phrases in existence. For many it is difficult, especially in the western world, to not visually associate The Three Wise Monkeys with the mentioned phrase.

And a Scripture comes to mind: 2 Corinthians 5:11-21 (Text: v.17)

"...Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new..."

Rather than turn a blind eye to a need in someone's life or avoid immorality in my life, as a Christian (NOT a religious person - there's a difference!) I'm compelled to extend grace, kindness compassion and mercy to wherever I see evil at work, whether it's defined as injustice or oppression.

Just as "His mercies are NEW every morning" for me, may 2007 bring NEW opportunities to "do good to all men" by caring versus turning away. That's my prayer.

Happy NEW Year!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Lines

Photo Hunt 37: Lines

Theme: Lines | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

With today's theme, I originally thought of architectural lines, ribbons and Christmas lights that intersect i.e. below at a mall:

It's Christmas and with it comes the hustle and bustle of commerce, people with sniffles and cashiers trying their best not to hate humanity...

And then there is a group of persons or things arranged in a row or series: Long lines at the checkout lanes

However today at Target, I really enjoyed the lack of lines by tucking myself away in the corner of STARBUCKS. So here's my choice for today's Photo Hunt - No lines with long architectural lines!

So in the midst of all the commerce on the other side of the wall, I a had a chance to relax and think about the meaning of Christmas, baby Jesus born in a manger, dinner with love ones and family with expressions of love and best wishes; in other word, all that is good about the holidays. Merry Christmas and blessings!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Annoying

Photo Hunt 36: Annoying

Theme: Annoying | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

Causing vexation or irritation; troublesome: an annoying cough.

transitive verb
1 : to disturb or irritate especially by repeated acts
2 : to harass especially by quick brief attacks
intransitive verb : to cause annoyance

Hmmm, should I post a picture of a Hummer parked in a handicapped parking space at WalMart or the classic blue screen of death:

Grrr.

Annoying indeed.

Windows XP, why you vex me so?

Thanks Apple for my iMac.

P.S. Ms. Hummer from the suburbs, please don't park in the handicapped space again. Height of 5'2" while talking on a cell phone does not entited you to a handicapped parking space.

Other annoying things by people

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Red

Photo Hunt 35: Red

Theme: Red | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

Up and down Charlotte Pike in West Nashville, there are pawn shops aplenty. I see the signs advertising DVD players for $9.00 and TV's starting at $20.00. I'm not one to frequent pawn shops as I'm somewhat distrustful of two things: buying hot stolen item (stereotypical, I know) and buying someone's tools of the trade who happens to be done on his luck. Surely that can't happen right? A carpenter trading in his skill saw in order to keep a roof over his head and feed his family.

But today on the way home, I was prompted to go in to visit this pawn shop. Subconciously, I was photo / scavenger hunting an item in red. I'd missed posting last week's photo hunt - Lights - as I just couldn't make time to visit a neon blazened movie theatre. My instincts were dead on:

Red indeed. With matching leopard print pattern.

Someone's trying to pawn off their taste in casual furniture... $119.00 each. Ask for Lynette if anyone is interested said the nice girl at the counter.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Time

Photo Hunt 33: Time

Theme: Time | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way

When I'm strolling the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park and I see see these tall massive granite markers marking significant points in Tennessee's history, I think of Pink Floyd's song "Time" from the album Dark Side of the Moon.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

The Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park is located in the shadow of the State Capitol in downtown Nashville. The 19-acre park is designed to complement the Tennessee Capitol Building, give visitors a taste of Tennessee's history and natural wonders, and to serve as a lasting monument to Tennessee's Bicentennial celebration.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Plush

Photo Hunt 32: Plush

Theme: Plush | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

From the Free Dictionary:

Adj. 1. plush - characterized by extravagance and profusion; "a lavish buffet"; "a lucullan feast"
lucullan, plushy, lavish, lush

rich - suggestive of or characterized by great expense; "a rich display"

I saw these works of art last year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. I wish now that I stopped and spent more time at this booth, as I don't even know the context of the exhibit other than TAKASHI YAMAGUCHI in the second photograph.

I know that art is in the eye of the beholder; and it's early in the morning as I write this, but seeing cellular phones framed as currency could be seen as extravagant. I know that there are great expections to expand (and monetize) the everyday use of the cell phone. Example: If 100 billion people in China use cell phones and each purchase $100 USD worth of ringtones and cellular content, extravangent lifestyles can be funded according to the forecasting models using Excel spreadsheets. Plush or extravagant thinking indeed!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Growth

Photo Hunt 31: Growth

Theme: Growth | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

I see these Christian one liners on church marquees and while some can be cheesy, there are those that pack a sermonette in a simple thought. The purpose of going to a church, one would hope is to grow spiritually with God using the Bible as the instruction manual for one's life.

What resonated with me on the sign above is the powerful image of a leader or a pastor who is going to provide a platform of opportunity for growth in one's life. Yes it is easier to preach ten sermons than to live one. Fathers, CEOs, managers, persons of influence... we seen (and suffered under) them... "Do as I say, not as I do.."

Growth - good growth always happens in the context of healthy relationships. Michael Jackson even sings about "A willow deeply scarred, somebody's broken heart and a washed-out dream.... I'm starting with the man in the mirror... Take a look at yourself and then make a change."

Leo Tolstoy nailed it - "Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself."

800 years ago, St. Francis of Assisi - "Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words."

(note to myself: Growth is good.)

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Window(s)

Photo Hunt 27: Window(s)

Theme: Window(s) | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

Cleaning Windows -
Oh, the smell of the bakery from across the street
Got in my nose
As we carried our ladders down the street
With the wrought-iron gate rows
I went home and listened to jimmie rodgers in my lunch-break
Bought five woodbines at the shop on the corner
And went straight back to work.

What's my line?
I'm happy cleaning windows
Take my time
I'll see you when my love grows
Baby don't let it slide
I'm a working man in my prime
Cleaning windows (number a hundred and thirty-six)

Van Morrison - Cleaning Windows at iTunes

I like this song by Van Morrison as he describes a person perfectly content going about his work life. People might say "I don't do windows", but he's looking beyond that as he likes ...blowing saxophone on the weekend, hearing leadbelly and blind lemon and reading christmas humphreys' book on zen...

Cleaning windows so that people can look out and daydream.

Safe - Affording protection... a safe place

Today in Nashville, it's a beautiful autumn afternoon. I'm watching these geese swim by in safe waters. This upscale apartment complex is set back from busy roads, so not only are these geese safe from traffic, but swimming together, there is safety in numbers.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt - Dreaming

Photo Hunt 27: Dreaming

Theme: Dreaming | Join the Photo Hunt | View Blogroll | Visit participants.

Dreaming - To have a deep aspiration; To regard something as feasible or practical; To conceive of; imagine...

This theme is pretty easy for me to grab hold of... when I "retire" to "refire" in my latter years or when I win the lottery, I'm gonna be chasing sunsets. That's my big dream coming true.

I'm dreaming of a day when I hop in my big RV and start heading west starting here in Nashville:

and winding up at the Pacific Ocean.

Pretty simple... there's something about sunsets. If I want to go Deep Thoughts with it, then here goes... sunsets cap off a day, good or bad with a promise of a better day to come... Fresh winds always blow in from the west... and starting in Nashville, I won't run out of highway for a while!

Maybe I'm getting all old man like, but I am dreaming of a day of visiting the USA in a big RV, photo blogging with my family and dogs in tow, with all my tech gear - simply priceless (and expensive).
